Interpretation of BTC Return Rate and Trading Strategy: How to Seize Bitcoin Trading Opportunities by Utilizing Historical Price Trends?

In the field of cryptocurrency, BTC return rate is a key indicator for measuring Bitcoin investment returns. It reflects the proportion of gains or losses suffered by investors holding Bitcoin during a specific period of time. The common calculation cycles for return rates include daily return rate, weekly return rate, monthly return rate, and quarterly return rate. Our article takes the monthly return rate as an example, as shown in the figure, to demonstrate the impact of changes in Bitcoin prices on investor returns every month.

Screenshot of Coinank's Bitcoin Monthly Return Rate Data, we can discover some interesting patterns and characteristics that have certain reference value for trading BTC:

The return rate fluctuates dramatically: Based on historical data, the monthly return rate of Bitcoin fluctuates greatly. In March 2013, the return rate was as high as 172.76%, while in January 2015, the return rate was as low as -33.05%. This significant fluctuation means that the Bitcoin market has a high degree of uncertainty and risk, but at the same time, it also brings opportunities for investors to obtain high returns. For investors with high risk tolerance and certain trading experience, they can use this volatility for short-term speculative trading. For example, when the market shows a clear upward trend and the return rate continues to grow positively, it is advisable to consider buying Bitcoin appropriately; When the return rate drops significantly and the market trend weakens, sell in a timely manner to lock in profits or avoid losses.

Seasonal or cyclical patterns: Although the Bitcoin market is influenced by multiple complex factors, some potential seasonal or cyclical patterns may still be observed from long-term data. For example, in specific months of certain years, the return rate may exhibit a relatively stable trend. In April 2017 and 2019, the return rates were both considerable, at 32.71% and 34.36%, respectively. This may imply that there may be investment opportunities in the Bitcoin market during certain specific periods. Investors can combine these patterns to develop investment plans in advance, increase investment appropriately during periods of high expected returns, and operate cautiously or reduce holdings during periods of low returns.

Correlation with market trends: By analyzing the relationship between monthly return data and overall market trends, trading timing can be better grasped. When Bitcoin is in a bull market, the return rate is often high and has been continuously increasing for several months, such as in some months of 2017 and 2020. In this situation, investors can firmly hold Bitcoin and even increase their positions appropriately to gain more returns. On the contrary, in bear markets, returns are often negative, and investors should remain cautious and avoid blindly buying at the bottom. For example, in 2018, multiple months had negative returns, and investors could choose to take short positions or hold only a small amount of positions to avoid risk.

The rise and fall of Bitcoin in each month and the timing of buying and selling can be analyzed by combining the average and median of historical data:

Months with good performance: The average return rate in January was 10.5%, with a median return rate of 9.93%, and positive returns in most years; The average return rate in April was 13.86%, with strong growth occurring multiple times; The winning rate in July was 7:11, with an average return rate of 7.98%, often accompanied by a rebound after a decline in June; In October, most years had positive returns, with an average return of over 20% and a median of 27.70%; In November and December, the overall performance in the fourth quarter was strong.

Poor performing months: June has seen an average trader loss of 0.19% since 2013, with a median decline of 0.5%; The average return rate in August is -0.07%, and there is usually a mild correction of around -5% on average in September.

Buying timing: If the price rebounds or falls in January, consider buying; If the market falls or adjusts in mid to late September, you can buy the bottom due to the frequent rise in October; At the end of a bear market or the beginning of the following year, when prices fall to a low point and there are signs of bottoming out, it is advisable to buy based on technical indicators.

Selling timing: If there is a significant increase in April and it is close to or exceeds the historical average increase, and the market is overheated in the short term, partial selling can be done; In October and early fourth quarter, there was a significant increase, approaching or exceeding the historical fourth quarter increase, and it can be gradually sold in December or January of the following year; When the market has the characteristics of foam, such as crazy speculation, sharp price rise in the short term, the influx of new investors, and excessive media publicity, it should be sold in time no matter what month.

Combining other indicators for analysis: Relying solely on monthly return data for trading decisions is not enough, investors should also combine other technical indicators and fundamental analysis. For example, combining technical indicators such as moving averages and relative strength indices (RSI) to determine buying and selling signals in the market; Pay attention to the fundamental information of Bitcoin, such as market demand, technological development, policies and regulations, to comprehensively evaluate the investment value and future trends of Bitcoin.

BTC return rate is an important reference indicator. By analyzing historical Bitcoin monthly return rate data, we can discover some patterns and trends in the market, providing a certain basis for trading decisions. However, the cryptocurrency market has a high degree of uncertainty and risk, and investors should be cautious when trading, reasonably control risks, and conduct comprehensive analysis based on multiple factors.
